COTTAGE About KANAKA-VILLAGE
Former Airfield Area
"Suzaki," a former naval airfield site, is currently being considered as a potential location for a new airport (as of 2024).
This unique coastline features scattered large rocks, perfect for rock exploration at low tide, fishing, and winter sunset viewing.
Warm clothing is recommended when visiting. A mat or cushion is useful when sitting on the rocky areas.
Ogiura Bay
Located southeast of Futami Bay, this beach was named "Ogiura" (Fan Bay) after a rock that resembles a fan's pivot point.
The shoreline has few corals and rocks, making it safe for children to play. Further out, you can find corals, fish, and wartime bunkers and ladder marks.
It's also known as a spot to see the sunken "Wreck of Transport Ship No. 4," making it popular among history enthusiasts.
During certain seasons, you can see schools of sardines, making it perfect for swimming and sunset viewing.
The sunset is particularly spectacular here, and you can enjoy it by SUP or kayak.
Subtropical Agricultural Center
This facility conducts research on subtropical agriculture in the Ogasawara Islands.
You can see precious endemic plants of Ogasawara here, and depending on the season, you might spot the Tridori flower.
It's a great spot for a leisurely stroll, and from mid-January, you can see the blooming of the Taiwan cherry trees in the parking area.
Kopepe Beach
A quiet and relaxing beach next to Kominato Beach.
Beyond the coral-rich shallows lies a white sandy area, and you might spot octopuses in the coral reefs.
Perfect for picnics.
The weak signal makes it a great spot for a digital detox.
Around October, you can watch the sunset between the capes.
Fukurozaki Cape
If you still have energy after climbing Nakayama Pass, this is another challenge for you.
This unmaintained route requires pushing through dense vegetation along a wildlife trail.
Be careful not to miss the stairs leading down to Buta Beach.
From Fukuro Cape, you can see Minami Island to the southwest, so if you have time, definitely extend your journey here.
Kominato Beach
After passing through the forest at the end of the Yatsuse River walking path, you'll reach Kominato Beach.
With white sand and crystal clear blue waters, this is the most remote beach from town, offering a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. The shallow waters have few corals, allowing light to penetrate and creating highly transparent waters.
There are two beach shelters, one built with an elegant design using Ogasawara palm. The area also offers opportunities to observe pillow lava on both sides, making it a great spot for geology enthusiasts.
USK Coffee
A stylish café near KANAKA-VILLAGE.
The kitchen car-style interior offers a variety of drinks. Their specialty "Bonin Island Coffee" uses beans grown on their own farm.
They also sell sweets and cookies with attractive displays that make you want to order more.
With its relaxing atmosphere, this is a great place to unwind, even alone.
Nakayama Pass Viewpoint
A natural spot at about 110m elevation, easily accessible from the lodge.
The single-path route is easy to follow, and the forested area offers plenty of shade and coolness, making it safe for beginners. At the top, you'll find a spectacular view, and if you're lucky, you might spot bottlenose dolphins in the bay.
While there's a roofed rest area at the summit, there's no other shade, so remember to bring water and a hat.
Yatsuse River Walking Path
A refreshing walking route recommended for early morning. Walking from the lodge along the Yatsuse River to Kominato Beach, you'll enjoy the gradually brightening sky and the refreshing breeze passing through the river. Along the river, you can spot Ogasawara black-banded sea kraits, herons, and goats.
One of the river's unique phenomena is that water levels decrease after heavy rain and increase during dry periods, creating an intriguing sight.
On windless days, the river surface reflects the sky and stars like a mirror, creating a magical scene. Don't miss this experience.
Tokeshi Waterfall
While "Tokeshi Waterfall" typically has low water volume, after heavy rain it shows its powerful presence with a thunderous roar that can be heard from the lodge. Visit the waterfall to experience nature's grandeur firsthand.
Relaxing in a nearby hammock while feeling the waterfall's breeze is also recommended.
If you're curious about the name's origin, ask your guide during the Heart Rock Trekking Tour.
KANAKA VILLAGE
Kanaka is a Hawaiian word meaning "person."
A term referring to the people of the Pacific Islands.
In 1830, Kanaka people came from Hawaii
and settled on Chichijima, which was then uninhabited.
Since then, the island has been continuously inhabited.
And this is
where the Kanaka settlement once stood.
Perhaps because of the waterfall nearby,
now called "Tokeshi Waterfall,"
which never dries up throughout the year,
KANAKA VILLAGE stands
in the most suitable location
for human habitation.

What should I pack for my stay?
Weather varies by season. Here's a packing guide:
Spring: Variable temperatures with windy and warm days. Pack short sleeves plus a light jacket or windbreaker.
Summer: High humidity and intense heat, but comfortable in the water. UV protection is essential - bring rash guards and light cover-ups.
Winter: While temperatures aren't extremely low, strong winds can make it feel chilly. Pack a warm windbreaker or compact winter wear.
We recommend bringing rain gear year-round for sudden showers.
